Multifactor Bias in Diagnosis and Treatment in the ED
The ED is a pressurized environment created by time constraints, cognitive stressors, limited patient relationships, minimal clinical data, and a vast range of patient complaints and acuity, which all prime biases. However, despite these findings, often bias education is not currently embedded into emergency medicine training. Biases have been linked to altered clinical decision‐making, misdiagnoses, medical errors, and potentially life-threatening and lethal outcomes (Zeidan et al., 2018).
In this course, you will learn about biases in the ED from a pressurized environmental lens throughout the course. You will first be introduced to biases, then learn more about different contributing factors to the causes, dig deeper into the types of biases with relevant examples and their overarching negative systemic impact on the ED. Lastly, you’ll learn about strategies to debias and “release that pressure valve” to help improve diagnostic and treatment outcomes for patients.
Define the classes of biases, including implicit, cognitive, and explicit biases seen in the ED. Identify the causes of and types of implicit, explicit, and cognitive biases, as well as negative outcomes seen in the ED. Recall strategies to debias diagnostic and treatment outcomes in the ED.
Recognizing and Treating Stroke
By understanding the causes of stroke and how to treat and prevent it, you can make a significant difference in the lives of those you care for. This course will help you identify the symptoms of a stroke and provide you with the necessary knowledge to provide care during and after the stroke.

Septic Joint: Diagnosis and Treatment
Septic arthritis is caused by infection and inflammation in the joint and can result in significant damage to the joints. Early recognition and treatment are critical to the preservation of joint function. This course will discuss how to quickly identify and treat septic arthritis.
The goal of this course is to provide physicians, nursing professionals, and radiologic technologists with information about septic arthritis.
Recall how septic arthritis is acquired and its typical presentation.
Identify the laboratory and radiological tests used to make a diagnosis of a septic joint.
Recognize the principles of septic joint treatment.
Stroke: Recognition and Management
This course equips healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and skills to promptly and effectively manage stroke in the acute care setting. Participants will gain insight into how to recognize an acute stroke and the initial steps to take for emergency treatment of stroke. In addition, learners will know the different acute treatment options for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke as well as patient care for acute stroke.
